The Gift of Time

The Gift of Time: Why It’s the One Present You Can’t Return (and Won’t Want To)

Life’s most precious currency. You can earn more money, but you can’t earn more hours.

Have you ever unwrapped a gift, smiled politely, and thought, What am I supposed to do with this? Yeah, me too. (Looking at you, knitted toilet roll cover.) But there’s one gift that’s never the wrong size, never goes out of style, and doesn’t come with a dreaded gift receipt: the gift of time.

Time is like that mysterious item in the fridge, it disappears before you know it. And unlike leftovers, you can’t pop it in the microwave to bring it back. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. That’s why it’s the ultimate present, whether you’re giving it to yourself, a loved one, or the local cat shelter (those furballs deserve love too).

Why Time Is More Valuable Than a Black Friday Deal

Let’s face it, money is great. But if someone handed you a billion bucks and said you only had a day left to live, would you spend it shopping for yachts? (If yes, you might need a priority check. Or a yacht obsession intervention.) The truth is, time is life’s ultimate currency. You can earn more money, but you can’t earn more hours.

Here’s an anecdote for you: I once spent an entire weekend assembling a flat-pack wardrobe. Now, I love DIY projects and am pretty handy with tools, but this thing was like an IKEA Rubik’s cube on steroids (cause who reads manuals anyway). By the time it was done (perfectly, might I add), I stepped back and thought, Wow, what a sturdy piece of furniture. But almost immediately, another thought hit me: That’s 48 hours of my life I’ll never get back.

Lesson learned: even when you’re good at something, it’s important to ask—does this project truly deserve my time? Because your time is worth more than even the most flawlessly assembled wardrobe.

How to Give the Gift of Time This Festive Season

Forget socks, bath sets, or yet another mug with a quirky slogan. This year, give the gift that truly matters. (No, not a Ferrari. Though, if you’re feeling generous, I’ll happily send my address.) I mean quality time.

Be All There

No, not in a philosophical way—just in a put-your-phone-down-for-five-minutes way. Ever tried holding a conversation with someone who’s busy scrolling TikTok? It’s like talking to a brick wall, only less interactive. This festive season, be present. Look people in the eye. Laugh at their jokes, even the bad ones.

Plan a Zero-Distraction Day

Set aside a day where you actually spend time with loved ones. No emails, no "just checking something" on your phone, and definitely no work talk. Play games, bake cookies, or watch that Christmas movie you secretly love but pretend to hate (Love Actually, I see you).

Give Experiences, Not Things

Skip the shopping mall chaos. Instead, gift an experience—like a picnic, a pottery class, or even a home-cooked meal where you don’t burn the dessert. These moments are the ones people will remember, not the scarf they’ll accidentally shrink in the wash.

Volunteer

Nothing says "holiday spirit" like giving your time to those who need it most. Whether it’s serving meals at a shelter or wrapping presents for underprivileged kids, a little time spent helping others can warm more hearts than a spiked eggnog.

Looking Back Before Moving Forward

The end of the year is a natural time for reflection. Think back to the moments that made you laugh until you cried (or snorted). The ones where you felt truly connected. And yes, even the ones where you learned that assembling IKEA furniture can ruin friendships.

Now, ask yourself: How can you create more of those moments next year? Maybe it’s Sunday brunches with your family. Maybe it’s finally starting that project you’ve been “too busy” for. Whatever it is, prioritise it. Time waits for no one, but you can sure as heck make the most of it.

Why Time Is the Ultimate Gift

At the end of the day, the best presents aren’t wrapped in shiny paper or topped with bows. They’re the shared laughs, the bear hugs, and the “remember when” stories. Time isn’t just a gift—it’s the best gift. It’s how we show people they matter. It’s how we make memories.

So, as you sip your hot chocolate and pretend not to notice your cat eyeing the Christmas tree, think about this: How can you use your time to spread joy this season? Because when all the decorations come down and the leftover turkey’s gone, the moments you spent with the people you love will be what lingers.

Now, go forth and be generous with your time. And if you still need to buy gifts, maybe throw in a quirky mug. You know, just in case.

"From the moment we are born, our time begins to slip away. Use it wisely and live fully."
